(Cleveland) – The Honorable Michelle D. Earley has been unanimously re-elected as Administrative and Presiding Judge of the Cleveland Municipal Court.

Judge Earley, who has served on the bench since 2009, was first elected to the position of Administrative and Presiding Judge, a year ago.  Under her leadership, the Court created the Pretrial Services Department, the first new department in 23 years. Pretrial services, in conjunction with the Court’s use of a risk assessment tool, are critical to assisting the Court in making prompt, fair and effective release or detention decisions.

“The Court continues to make strides to improve the fairness and cost-effectiveness of the criminal justice system, increase public safety and reduce recidivism,” said Judge Earley.

Looking to 2019, under Judge Earley’s leadership, the Court plans to expand services available in the Pretrial Services Department to assist more individuals charged with misdemeanor offenses. Additionally, Judge Earley, who came to the court with a strong background in technology, is preparing the Court for the initial phase of the implementation of a new case management system that will enhance new technologies and provide a more efficient system of justice.

The Cleveland Municipal Court has jurisdiction in misdemeanor cases where the maximum sentence does not exceed one year in jail and/or a fine of not more than $1,000, the initial appearances of those charged with felony offenses committed within its jurisdiction, small claims not exceeding $6,000 and civil disputes that can range as high as $15,000.
